Born in Miami, Florida, Wynne graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1984. In 1989, he earned a master's in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. Wynne began his journalism career working as an entertainment reporter and television columnist for the ''San Antonio Light'' newspaper in Texas. After the Hearst paper folded in 1994, he moved to Los Angeles. He wrote an episode for ''Walker, Texas Ranger'' titled "The Big Bingo Bamboozle" that featured Doris Roberts and Robert Forster as guest stars.〔() IMDB Accessed 11 February 2015.〕
Wynne is a long-time contributor to ''Forbes'' magazine and a former writer for ''Walker, Texas Ranger''. Wynne's ''Forbes'' column, "A Different Lens,"〔Wynne, Robert. () ''Forbes'' Accessed 11 February 2015.〕 focuses on the practice of public relations and examines topics ranging from social media and crisis PR to best practices in writing and methods to build relationships with reporters and editors. In Los Angeles, he also worked as a free-lance reporter for ''Newsweek'' magazine and the ''Los Angeles Times'' covering entertainment, television and lifestyle magazine stories.
Wynne worked for the University of Southern California for 5 years in the main public relations office then as the Director of Marketing for the Marshall School of Business.
